A huge congratulations to Shirley MA Fire Captain Joe Hawthorne for making a rescue early Sunday morning. The fire was reported to the Shirley dispatch center at 2:08am as a structure fire in a four unit apartment building with people trapped. Capt. Hawthorne who lives around the corner from the fire location was first on scene with the two on duty police officers. Upon arrival the Captain encountered heavy fire conditions from the front of the structure and proceeded to the rear where he climbed to the second floor experiencing heavy smoke and fire. He located the victim and removed her down the stairs where the two police officers assissted him in removing her the rest of the way from the building. She was treated by EMS and transported to Leominster Hosp. She is currently in critical condition in a Boston Hospital.
